Being in a funk sucks. It feels like you’re in a foggy murky stinky bog in a damp little wooden boat and you can’t see the land to know where to row. Plus you also kinda just wanna take a nap.
I was here just recently and discovered a great way to get out of it that I wanted to share with you!
The trouble with funks, with frustration, with feeling small, is that it limits the choices we make. It puts us on the defense, energetically speaking, and so we strategize and interact with the world in a very limited way, which creates limited results.
We make choices based on surviving, rather than thriving. And we get stuck.
Our challenge is to figure out how to start living on the offense again. To take charge of our lives. To make big, joyful choices. To receive and love. Which is hard to do when you’ve been there so long.
Luckily, it’s totally possible. And easy. And yummy (like sour patch kids).
Which is great, because I’m sure you feel like you’ve tried everything to get out of this. And trust me, it’s not something you can think your way out of. Save that brain power for doing you taxes.
The trick is to first align your heart, as it’s much easier to convince than your strategizing, survival-focused lizard brain.
Align the heart and the head will follow.
How to Re-Align your Heart:
Imagine a flower in your heart space (My favorite are Camellias. I become obsessed with these beautiful early-bloomers each Spring.)
Start with it as a little bud, hardened and tight from protecting itself through the winter.
Now take a deep breath, in and out, and slowly let that bud begin to bloom.
As the petals open, feel the sorrow and stress escape.
Notice the space created and the energy that replaces it.
Let the petals fully expand and curl back, become huge and juicy and joyful.
Imagine the energy emanating from the bloomed flower touching all aspects of your life. Transforming them with magic and joy. (Kinda like the nature fairy scene in Fantasia)
You may notice other senses kicking on. Sparkly light shining out from the flower, music, beautiful smells, or you may physically feel expansive in your heart. Go with it.
Sit in this space, with the flower fully expanded and radiating for as long as you want.
This practice helps shift our energy so we can approach life with an open, joyful heart again. It makes us more capable of receiving and creating from a place of power, confidence, possibility, and of course, love. A little heart-generator, as a dear friend of mine would call it.
I invite you to reimagine the flower open and radiating from your heart any time you feel sorrowful or funky in your day.
For me to fully come out of the funk I was in, I did this initial visualization, which immediately shifted my energy and perspective. Then I reimagined the flower at my heart multiple times each day when I noticed myself contracted. It’s like a nice little joyful kick in the pants.
I hope this tool is a gift to you! Remember, we all go through funks. You are a wonderful being, full of possibility. You will get out of it.
